Selecting Chimney Pots When selecting a chimney pot consider the top opening in relation to the fireplace opening, and the base dimensions in relation to the flue.
The top opening of the pot can be smaller than the effective area of the flue liner in order to reduce the effect of wind on the draft. Flue area is typically 1/10 the fireplace opening area but the top opening can be reduced to 1/15 - 1/20. The base of the chimney pot often fits over the flue liner but in any case the base of the chimney pot should not be smaller than the flue. Many other factors such as fireplace and chimney construction as well as house air pressure can affect proper chimney operation.
